Vacation

I have been on vacation for the past week.  I took a break from my blog, from my every day routine, and from healthy living.  No…I’m just kidding about the last part, but that is the dilemma that many face when on vacation.  Here are my 3 thoughts for you:

  • Don’t stress, enjoy new foods (or your favorite foods), and relax.  That’s what vacations are for.  HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean you need to forget about your healthy habits and eat until you feel like you are going to throw up.
  • Realize that rest can sometimes be in the form of exercise.  One of my favorite things to do is ride my bike when I am down the shore.  Going on a vacation often provides so many opportunities to be active in ways that you might not normally be able to do.
  • Snack well.  If possible, bring food along that will be a good option for when you need to eat in between meals.  This week it was nuts and dark chocolate that helped me when I needed something either salty or sweet.
The word vacation is from the word vacare, which means “to be empty, free, or at leisure.”  It is not freedom to be bound by the addiction of food.  It is not freedom to be bound by the restriction of a diet.  Be free, find a balance, and if possible find some rest through something active.
