In the past, I have written about the Environmental Working Group and the different things they offer for those who try to be healthy consumers. They have a yearly list called the Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen, which is helpful in knowing what to try to buy organic. They also have a great database that helps with buying cosmetics, and an app that you can even use while you shop. Ever since I started using this app, I was waiting for the day that they would create something similar for food. Well…it finally happened!
The EWG’s Food Scores is up and running, and it scores your food based on nutrition, ingredients, and amount of processing. I believe that the more “real” your food is, the better. However, it is hard to completely avoid all things packaged, so I think this will be a very useful tool. A good way to start is to check the foods that you consume most regularly and see how you can start making small changes. One step at a time…you don’t have to be perfect, but don’t ignore the facts.
